The University of South Dakota (USD) seeks an experienced and innovative archivist to lead all aspects of the Archives and Special Collections Department in the I.D. Weeks & Lommen Health Sciences Libraries. USD is a research institution with quality standards in research and publication. Faculty librarians excel in librarianship, conduct library-related research, publish, and engage in service to the profession. The archivist librarian is responsible for planning; collection development; donor relations; processing, organization, records management, maintenance, and preservation of collections; reference; instruction; and outreach.

Specific responsibilities include:
• Partnering with faculty to integrate scholarly and primary information sources (including USD’s unique materials) into teaching, learning, and research
• Promoting USD archives and special collections to all potential audiences
• Participating actively in campus, state, and regional digitization, digital library, and institutional repository projects
• Guiding campus digitization initiatives, including establishing standards, workflows, and policies for such projects
• Collaborating and partnering on local, regional, and national levels to address issues and challenges facing archives and special collections departments
• Establishing, promoting, and sustaining an institutional records program
• Serving as liaison to one or more academic departments
• Providing reference and research assistance using all communication means (desk, phone, email, letter, IM, consultations)
• Participating in instructional and information literacy services, including teaching classes and designing web-based, instructional materials
• Preparing successful grant proposals and administering grants
• Advising on, designing, and mounting physical and virtual exhibits and events
• Serving on relevant library and campus committees

Reports directly to the Dean of USD Libraries. Supervises 1.85 library staff.

Minimum Qualifications: Master's degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited program (earned by hire date), including significant coursework in archives and/or special collections management; academic background in music, history, and/or another discipline in the humanities; reading knowledge of one or more languages in addition to English; experience in an academic library, museum, or archives, including processing archival collections and preparing finding aids; demonstrated knowledge of archival theory and practice; public service orientation and expertise, including experience providing reference and instruction; aptitude and interest in mastering emerging technologies; ability to work independently, collaboratively, and effectively with faculty, students, staff, donors, and the public; ability to guide the work of others; excellent oral and written communication skills; demonstrated ability to meet university standards in research, publication, and professional service commensurate with tenure requirements.

Desirable Qualifications: Advanced degree in music or history; experience writing and supporting grants; experience creating, maintaining, or administering digital library projects; knowledge of national and international standards and best practices in the arrangement and description of primary source materials (DACS, EAD, MARC21, etc.); experience creating online finding aids, exhibits, guides, metadata, and EAD mark-up; supervisory experience; and a record of scholarly publication.

Salary: $55,000 or higher depending on experience.

The University of South Dakota (USD) Libraries, which include the I.D. Weeks and Lommen Health Sciences Libraries and Wegner Health Sciences Information Center, are on the move. The Archivist and Special Collections Librarian will join a dynamic and innovative team of professionals who are working to create the next generation academic library to meet the needs of students and researchers of today and tomorrow. The Archivist will be instrumental in guiding the capture, preservation, and access to USD’s and the region’s unique history.

The USD Archives and Special Collections is the rare books, manuscripts and archives department of the I.D. Weeks and Lommen Health Sciences Libraries. It contains five research collections. The Chilson Collection includes over 19,000 items relating to local histories, South Dakota history, Native American cultures, and western expansion of the United States. The Mahoney Music Collection is one of the most complete collections in the United States pertaining to the violin and violin family instruments. The Richardson Collection contains an estimated 225 collections at 2525 linear feet that focus on South Dakota's cultural, political, and economic history. The USD Archives holds the records of the academic and administrative departments of USD as well as materials relating to the activities of its students, faculty, and alumni. The USD Photograph Collection comprises the largest and most comprehensive surviving photographic history of USD. The Archives and Special Collections staff consists of the Archivist, the Curator of Photographs, the Archives Associate, student assistants, interns, and volunteers.

The USD Archives and Special Collections faculty and staff collaborate with other noteworthy campus agencies to develop and provide access to exceptional primary materials for study and research, including:

National Music Museum
Founded in 1973 on the USD campus, the National Music Museum (NMM) & Center for Study of the History of Musical Instruments features the most unique and renowned collection in the world of American, European, and non-Western instruments, over 14,500 pieces from virtually all cultures and historical periods. Among the NMM’s outstanding holdings is the Witten-Rawlins Collection of early Italian stringed instruments crafted by Andrea Guarneri, Antonio Stradivari, three generations of the Amati family, and others.Included are two of only three 17th-century Cremonese stringed instruments preserved in unaltered condition, one of only two Stradivari guitars to be seen in a museum setting, and one of only two Stradivari mandolins known to survive.

South Dakota Oral History Center
The South Dakota Oral History Center (SDOHC), under the Department of American Indian Studies, administers one of the largest oral history collections of its kind in the United States. The SDOHC holds two major and distinct collections " the South Dakota Oral History Project (SDOHP) and the American Indian Research Project (AIRP). The purpose of the combined AIRP and SDOHP collections is to present a holistic view of the Indian and non-Indian history of South Dakota and the Northern Plains region from the 1860s through present times.

Department of American Indian Studies
The Department of American Indian Studies approaches teaching and research from a native perspective and emphasizes an interdisciplinary curriculum that spans American Indian thought, anthropology, art history, criminal justice, education, English, history, Lakota language, pre-law, pre-medicine, oral history, philosophy, political science, sociology, psychology, Siouan Tribal Culture, and women's studies.
