Archivist

The Sawyer Free Library, the largest of four public libraries on Cape Ann, serves the region's visitors and over 29,000 City of Gloucester residents.
The City will be celebrating its 400th anniversary in 2023. This yearlong community celebration will be a primary focus of the Archivist. The holdings of the City, numerous historical entities, and individuals include some of the oldest archival materials in the United States. There is an archival exhibition at the Cape Ann Museum through September 2018, "Unfolding Histories: Cape Ann before 1900," which includes some of the library's materials. The library was awarded an LSTA Preservation Assessment Grant and has applied for an LSTA Conservation and Digitization Grant. Management of these grants will be the Archivist's responsibility.

Supervision Exercised: May provide some supervision to library assistants, interns, and volunteers.

Responsibilities: Works under the general supervision of the Library Director. Primarily responsible to preserve, catalog, and make accessible the local history and archival collections of the Library and to serve as a professional archival consultant to the City.

Duties
Maintains the Librarys institutional archives, including following established legal retention schedules, preparing retention schedules, accessioning, de-accessioning, and creating finding aids.
Preserves, arranges, and describes archival materials according to current professional standards, including the creation of DACS-compliant EAD finding aids and MARC records.
Provides archival and local history information and research services for internal and external inquirers with the assistance of library information specialists and city archives volunteers.
Recommends policies and procedures for the Librarys archives and local history collections
Provides professional consultation on best practices for archives management to City Clerk, City Archives Committee, and city archives volunteers.
Plans, researches, and organizes archival exhibitions.
Consults on digitization projects when requested by City or other institutions.
Updates the Local History Library webpages and supports the maintenance of the City Archives webpages.
Maintains collaborative relationships with historical entities on Cape Ann.
Participates in strategic planning for access and digitization.
Advocates for a city-wide archival center by working with the Mayor, City Council, City Clerk, and City Archives volunteers.
Writes and manages grants.
Works with City IT Department, City Clerks Office, and the 400th Anniversary Committee.
Performs other duties as assigned/required by supervisor.

Qualifications:
Masters in Library and Information Science from an American Library Association accredited library school with specialization in archives administration or an equivalent combination of education and experience required.
A demonstrated understanding of archival principles of arrangement, preservation, and description for cataloging and database development; and familiarity with MARC data elements.
Experience managing grants and digitization projects.
Strong written and oral communications skills
Ability to function independently and as a part of a team.
Good organizational skills, a high level of concentration, and attention to detail, in order to maintain necessary high quality and consistency.

Preferred Qualifications:
One year experience processing, arranging and describing archival materials.
One year experience managing digital projects.
One year experience providing reference services.
Experience maintaining a local history collection
Proficiency with computer hardware and peripherals.
Proficient in word processing and spreadsheet applications and GSuite.
Knowledge and experience with MARC, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Bridge, QuickBase, EAD and DACS.
Experience in website development, e.g. WordPress.
Knowledge of Cape Ann history.
