Project SAVE Armenian Photograph Archives seeks an Archivist to manage, promote, and steward its collection. Project SAVE is dedicated to saving the photographic heritage of the worldwide Armenian community by making our repository of original photographs, from as early as 1860, accessible for research, publications and presentations.
Roles and Responsibilities
Manage collection of 45,000+ photographs and related documents. Oversees accessioning, processing, cataloging, and preservation of collections.
Execute in-house digitization of photograph collection, oversee external digitization, transportation and cataloging.
Establish digitizing procedure of audio tapes, initiate in-house or external digitization of 600+ audio tapes including transcription, sound editing and segmentation.
Create policy and procedure and standards for accepting digital photographs, to ensure credibility and authenticity of images and security of digital files.
Database Administrator for PastPerfect and Access databases. Responsible for system upgrades, security, and changes and additions to authority files. Provide reference service to diverse researchers in person, by phone and by email. Access database tracks use by external requests and internal usage calendar, social media, and promotional uses.
Fill photo requests, create and send watermarked thumbnails for consideration, ensure proper credit is given
Train and supervise interns and volunteers in researching the context and background of photographs, as well as scanning and cataloging procedures.
Process accessions of new photographs and obtain necessary permission for their use.
Participate in interviewing photograph donors about family history, identity, and context of photographic subjects
Consultation with IT contractor, plan and collaborate on improvements to electronic infrastructure, file maintenance, security, and backup procedures.
Contribute research and content to digital exhibits, online collections database, power point presentations, fundraising appeals, photograph captions, calendar text, social media and other publications. Provides watermarked images for web use.
Speak with school groups and other visitors about archiving, digitization, and collections, and publicly at lectures and events to promote the work and mission of Project SAVE Archives.
Consult and collaborates with other professionals working in the archives and history fields on best practices in collections management, digitization, and preservation.
Maintain listing of Ottoman, Armenian, and Diasporan place names which includes variant names, spellings, and countries during the era of photography.
A successful applicant for the position of Archivist will possess a number of specific qualifications. These will include:
Required Qualifications:
Masters degree in Library/Information/Archives Science or related subject matter from an ALA accredited school or equivalent;
Minimum of 3-5 years experience in the archives profession and/or an applicable field (such as museum or historical society work);
Strong verbal and written communication and listening skills;
Knowledge of archival preservation concepts and practices including digital materials;
Proficiency in Microsoft Office;
Proficiency in database administration (data entry and research)
Self-sufficient, self motivated and team player
Ability to lift boxes weighing up to 40 pounds and climb ladder to remove and replace items on shelving units.
Desired qualifications:
Experience setting up archives;
Experience working with historical societies;
Experience with multiple cataloging systems;
Experience with digital material, including preservation and security
Working knowledge of Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom
Working knowledge of past perfect software
Interest in photographic archives, Armenian culture and history
Practical approach to problem-solving
Compensation:
This is a part time or full-time position, proposed salary is $28,000-$38,000 based on experience, plus $2,000 annual health insurance reimbursement.
Flexible schedule is available, a portion of the work is possible to do remotely.
Professional Development-encouraged to attend workshops webinars and conferences to learn new/best practices and network with professionals in the field.
