Audiovisual Archives Specialist (Contract)

The Archives Center at the Smithsonian Institutions National Museum of American History collects, preserves, and provides access to archival materials that complement the museums exhibition, research, and collecting programs. The Center holds over 1500 collections documenting United States history and its diverse cultures. Our collection strengths are: the history of technology, invention and innovation, business and consumer culture, American music, social history, and popular culture. The Archives Center is undertaking a grant-funded project to preserve and provide access to audiovisual materials, with a focus on motion picture film. We are seeking a contractor to primarily:

Inventory, arrange, and describe audiovisual collections materials in ArchivesSpace
Coordinate audiovisual digitization projects with an external vendor
Ingest digitized collection material into the Smithsonian Institutions Digital Asset Management System (DAMS)

This is a full-time (40 hours/week), one-year contract opportunity expected to start in December 2021/January 2022. Please note that this project requires a mix of in-person and virtual work. The contractor will be treated as part of the project team and trained on processes and software specific to our unit. Competitive bidders will demonstrate some or all of the following:

Masters degree in library and information science, archives, or film production OR demonstrated experience working in an archival repository
Experience handling motion picture film, including splicing, bench work, and transferring from reel to core
Experience with collections information systems, digital asset management systems, and archival descriptive standards
Ability to manage projects, track progress of complex tasks, and work
independently and as part of a team
